Community Meeting about Traffic Improvements for Henderson Middle School
Community Meeting about Traffic Improvements for Henderson Middle School
Henderson Middle School and the DeKalb School System invite you to a community meeting on Sept. 16th at 6 pm. The community meeting will be held in the school cafeteria.
The purpose of this community meeting is to present the proposed plan designed to resolve the traffic congestion and safety issues in the area.
The Board of Education (BOE) approved $1.6 million for upgrades to Henderson Middle School in February 2009. Historically, Henderson Middle School was Henderson High School. At the time Henderson High became Henderson Middle School in 1996, no work was done to convert the facilities for middle school use. The money approved by the BOE is for the purpose of moving the conversion process forward.
As a high school, Henderson was designed to accommodate student drivers, thus the large number of parking lots. It was not designed to accommodate carpools and large numbers of buses which are a necessity in middle schools. Henderson Middle has struggled with pedestrian traffic and motor
vehicle traffic for quite some time.
Through the Local School Priority request process in SPLOST III, the school council submitted a request for a traffic study which was approved and completed last spring. The study did reveal significant issues and
high volumes of traffic creating safety concerns. Based on that data, an architectural firm was selected to work with the school to begin creating a master plan for Henderson with a new traffic design as a top priority for a portion of the funds that have been allocated.
We invite the Henderson community to join us and learn more about the proposal.
Thanks! Cheers- Heather
