Travel the World on Buford Highway

Travel the World on Buford Highway

You can travel the world on Buford Highway even if money is tight and you may have cut back on your summer travel budget.  If you still have a hankering to travel to another country but the wallet says “no,” try out a local dining alternative.  The diversity in metro Atlanta and capitalism-in-action has created a whole slew of options for enjoying authentic cuisine from countries all around the world. As a matter of fact, you can Travel the World on Buford Highway by visiting a whole bunch of ethnic restaurants that serve up delicious food from their home countries.

The English family doesn’t dine out very often in the evening.  We prefer to spend the time at home and enjoy grilling out on the patio with family and friends.  But, if you venture out at lunch you might come across us in at least one of us in the following restaurants:

Mediterranean Bakery in Embry Hills

MEDITERANEAN BAKERY: Lebanese food made to order.  Beef or Chicken shawarmi, shish ka bobs, baba ghanouj, tabuli, hummus and fresh pita.  The Middle Eastern clientele sitting all around you should be an indication that this is the real deal.   Meat is prepared on a large spit and portions are shaved off as they are ordered.  If you don’t know what to order, just walk up to the counter and ask them to pick something out for you.  CDC employees fill the room at lunch.  Our favorite features are the friendly owners, large portions and tasty food.  3350 Chamblee Tucker Rd.  (Located in the shopping center behind Embry Hills McDonald’s.) EMBRY HILLS

LITTLE CUBA RESTAURANT IN EMBRY HILLS

LITTLE CUBA RESTAURANT: Have an espresso after enjoying a satisfying Cuban meal of arroz con pollo, boliche, black beans, fried plantains, rice and flan for dessert.  One of our favorites is the Cuban sandwich.  We love the great lunch specials (Lucy, Ricky and Ethel) and the incredible value for the dollar.  3350 Chamblee Tucker Rd (Same shopping center as Mediterranean Bakery) EMBRY HILLS

Cafe Hot Wings in Embry Hills

CAFE HOT WING II RESTAURANT: Our former neighbors Dave and Rich (English Team Customers for Life) spent almost every Friday night at this very non-descript wing joint in the Embry Hills shopping center and still travel back to Embry Hills to dine here.  The number one reason to go: wings.  The number two reason to go: wings. They are the best! Jun Yum is the proprietor. 3551 Chamblee Tucker Rd. (Next to the Billiards Club in the Kroger Shopping Center) EMBRY HILLS

Restaurant in Embry Hills

THE LOOP PIZZA GRILL: Pizza, salads and shakes.  A favorite of the swim team after summer weeknight swim meets.  Dine al fresco on the upstairs deck.  3537 Chamblee Tucker Rd (Other side of the Billiards club in the Kroger Shopping Center) EMBRY HILLS

Hae Woon Dae Restaurant on Buford Highway

Hae Woon Dae Korean bbq restaurant: “dinner cooked at your table over charcoal briquettes.”  Bul Gogi ($14.95): marinated beef, chicken piles of lettuce leaves and a bowl of garlic paste allow diners to make there own wraps from meats grilled right at the table. Other options include chicken and pork spare ribs.  Ask the waiter for help with the grilling on the first go around. Lots of Kim chi appetizers are brought out before the meal.  Warning: all lunch specials ($5.95) are brought to the table already cooked.  You have to order off the dinner menu to bar-be-que the beef on the charcoal grates at your table. It is so delicious.  It’s located behind a strip club in a run down shopping center on Buford highway.  The surroundings are drab, but once you are inside you won’t regret your decision to try this out. Just outside the perimeter at 5805 Buford Highway. BUFORD HIGHWAY

LITTLE SZECHUAN RESTAURANT ON BUFORD HIGHWAY

Chinese Restaurants: Family faviorite Hontos is long deceased, but forever mourned.  We continue to sample Chinese restaurants up and down Buford Highway in a never-ending search for a Chinese restaurant that would equal the quality and variety of Hontos (before its untimely demise).  Little Szechuan is the present favorite, but the hunt continues. Order anything on the menu that’s served with the black bean sauce. Inside the Perimeter at 5091 Buford Hwy.
