He used to grow big crops of corn and green beans and did canning in the basement. We added the Leyland cypress border over several years, put in the raised beds and added perennial beds and additional bushes and trees. The Saint Augustine grass was originally started by a neighbor who was a groundskeeper at the old Atlanta-Fulton Co Stadium (1960s).”

The vast green lawn and arch wooden bridge give a sense of calm and open space. Beginning with established fruit and nut trees and a long expanse of grape vines, they have added stepping stones to raised beds for their “working garden” and rock lined perennial beds with a wonderful variety of color, fragrance and texture surrounding their home. The Coles think that every southern garden needs at least one weeping willow along with magnolia, dogwood, crepe myrtle, camellia and azaleas. They have successfully introduced a palm tree too. They enjoy experimenting with propagation, ornamental plants, the unique cactus garden, and a bamboo canebrake. For the second year they are using the “straw bale strategy” for producing tomatoes through November.”
